Insecurity: Senate Calls for Suspension of Political Campaigns in Eight Northern States

The Nigerian Senate has urged political stakeholders to consider suspending election campaign activities in eight northern states due to rising insecurity and worsening security threats in several communities.

The resolution followed a heated plenary session where lawmakers expressed concern over escalating banditry, kidnapping, and violent attacks affecting voters, candidates, and electoral officials across parts of the North-West and North-Central regions.

Senators warned that continuing political rallies and campaigns in highly volatile areas could further endanger lives and disrupt ongoing security operations. They emphasized that protecting citizens must take priority over political ambitions ahead of the next election cycle.

The motion specifically referenced states severely affected by insecurity, where rural communities have been displaced and access roads remain unsafe. Lawmakers called on security agencies to intensify operations while urging political parties to temporarily halt large gatherings in affected zones.

Some senators supported a coordinated national security emergency approach, including increased deployment of security personnel, intelligence sharing, and community-based protection strategies.

However, others raised concerns that suspending campaigns could have constitutional and democratic implications, suggesting instead stricter security protocols for political events.

The Senate is expected to engage the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security chiefs, and political party leaders for a unified response in the coming days.
