Airlines Threaten Thursday Shutdown Over Fuel Price Hike
Air travel in Nigeria may face major disruption as domestic airlines have announced plans to shut down operations on Thursday in protest against the continued increase in aviation fuel (Jet A1) prices.
According to industry sources, the cost of aviation fuel has surged significantly in recent weeks, placing severe financial pressure on airline operators. Airline representatives say the situation has become unsustainable, with fuel accounting for a large percentage of operational expenses.
The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) and other stakeholders reportedly held emergency meetings over the issue, warning that without immediate government intervention, flights across the country may be grounded temporarily from Thursday.
Passengers are already expressing concern over possible flight cancellations and delays, especially on major routes such as LagosâAbuja, LagosâPort Harcourt, and AbujaâKano. Travel agencies are also preparing for potential disruptions, with some advising customers to postpone non-essential trips.
Industry experts argue that the rising cost of Jet A1 is linked to global crude oil fluctuations, foreign exchange instability, and local supply constraints. However, airline operators insist that urgent policy measures, including possible fuel subsidies or price stabilization mechanisms, are needed to prevent a full aviation shutdown.
As of press time, government aviation authorities have yet to issue an official response, but stakeholders are calling for immediate dialogue to avert the planned industrial action.
If implemented, the shutdown could impact thousands of passengers and disrupt business, medical, and emergency travel nationwide.
