Fuel Price Tensions Ease as Keyamo, NMDPRA Intervene
Nigeriaâs ongoing concerns over rising fuel prices may soon see relief as the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, alongside the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, has stepped in to address volatility in the downstream petroleum sector.
The intervention follows weeks of public outcry over fluctuating petrol pump prices across major cities, driven by supply chain disruptions, foreign exchange challenges, and deregulation policies. Industry stakeholders, including marketers and depot owners, had warned that inconsistent pricing was hurting both consumers and businesses.
Keyamo disclosed that discussions are underway with key players in the oil and gas sector to ensure price stability and prevent exploitative practices. He emphasized the need for transparency in fuel distribution and hinted at stronger monitoring mechanisms to check arbitrary price hikes.
The NMDPRA also reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing compliance with pricing guidelines, noting that while the market operates under deregulation, operators must act within fair and competitive frameworks. The agency warned that sanctions could be imposed on marketers found engaging in price manipulation or hoarding.
Analysts say the governmentâs involvement signals a balancing act between maintaining a free market and protecting consumers from excessive costs. While the long-term solution may lie in boosting local refining capacity and stabilizing the naira, immediate regulatory oversight is expected to calm tensions.
Citizens and transport operators are watching closely, hoping the intervention will translate into more predictable and affordable fuel prices in the coming weeks.
