China Hands Over $56.5 Million ECOWAS Headquarters in Abuja
China has officially handed over a newly completed headquarters complex worth $56.5 million to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Abuja, Nigeria, strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between Beijing and West Africa.
The modern facility, located in Nigeriaâs capital city, was fully financed and constructed by the Chinese government as part of its broader cooperation and infrastructure partnership with African nations. The handover ceremony was attended by senior ECOWAS officials, Nigerian government representatives, and Chinese diplomats.
Speaking during the event, ECOWAS leaders described the new headquarters as a symbol of regional unity and international partnership. They noted that the complex would improve the organisationâs administrative efficiency and support its mission of promoting economic integration, peace, and stability across West Africa.
Chinese officials said the project reflects Beijingâs commitment to supporting African development through infrastructure, trade, and diplomatic cooperation. China has remained one of Africaâs largest trading partners and a major financier of roads, railways, government buildings, and energy projects across the continent.
The headquarters project has also sparked discussions among analysts about Chinaâs growing influence in Africa. While supporters see such investments as beneficial for regional development, critics continue to raise concerns over dependence on Chinese financing and geopolitical influence.
ECOWAS, founded in 1975, comprises 15 West African nations and plays a major role in regional peacekeeping, economic policy coordination, and democratic governance.
