2027: ‘Don’t Pull Down the Roof,’ Shettima Warns Politicians Against Disunity
Vice President Kashim Shettima has cautioned Nigerian politicians against actions and utterances capable of causing division and instability ahead of the 2027 general elections, urging political leaders to place national unity above personal ambition.
Speaking during a stakeholders’ engagement in Abuja, Shettima warned that desperation for political power should not lead to the destruction of democratic institutions or the country’s fragile unity. He stressed that disagreements within political parties and among political actors must be handled with maturity and dialogue rather than hostility.
The Vice President used the metaphor “don’t pull down the roof” to advise politicians against heating up the polity with inflammatory statements, divisive campaigns, and unnecessary political confrontations. According to him, Nigeria’s democracy can only thrive when leaders embrace tolerance, cooperation, and peaceful competition.
Shettima also appealed to party members across the country to avoid internal crises capable of weakening democratic structures ahead of the 2027 elections. He noted that political stability remains vital for economic growth, investor confidence, and national development.
The Vice President reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to sustaining democratic governance, national peace, and inclusive development. He called on Nigerians to support efforts aimed at strengthening unity regardless of ethnic, religious, or political differences.
Political observers believe the remarks may be connected to growing tensions and alignments among political parties and coalitions preparing for the next election cycle.
