Amnesty Alleges 150 Fulani Deaths in Kwara ‘Detention Camp,’ Demands Probe

Amnesty International has accused Nigerian authorities of failing to protect displaced Fulani families allegedly held at a camp in Kwara State, claiming that at least 150 people, mostly women and children, died from hunger, disease and poor living conditions.

According to Amnesty’s report, the victims were among about 1,500 Fulani pastoralists detained for over three months at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp in Yikpata, Kwara State. The rights group described the facility as overcrowded and unsanitary, alleging that detainees suffered severe malnutrition, restricted movement and inadequate healthcare.

Amnesty said many of the detainees had fled violent attacks by armed groups in parts of Kwara, including Asa, Edu, Ifelodun and Patigi local government areas, before being relocated by security operatives to the camp. The organization claimed several children and pregnant women died due to starvation and illness, while survivors spoke of worsening humanitarian conditions inside the facility.

Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, Isa Sanusi, said the detainees were “facing persecution on two fronts,” alleging that they were denied access to adequate food, healthcare, education and freedom of movement. Amnesty also accused authorities of discriminatory profiling and arbitrary detention of Fulani communities.

The Nigerian military has rejected the allegations. Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, reportedly denied that the camp was under military control and dismissed the claims as lacking verifiable evidence.

Amnesty International has called for an independent and transparent investigation into the reported deaths and urged the Federal Government to provide justice, accountability and humanitarian support for affected families.
