Xenophobia: 130 Nigerians Sign Up for South Africa Evacuation

No fewer than 130 Nigerians living in South Africa have reportedly registered for possible evacuation following renewed fears over xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals in parts of the country.

Officials of the Nigerian Mission in South Africa disclosed that many Nigerians, including traders, students, and workers, have approached the embassy seeking assistance amid growing tension and safety concerns. Community leaders said several Nigerians now fear for their lives and businesses after reports of attacks, looting, and threats against immigrants resurfaced in some communities.

The Nigerian government is said to be monitoring the situation closely while engaging South African authorities to ensure the protection of Nigerians and other foreign nationals. Diplomatic sources revealed that emergency communication channels have been opened to support affected citizens and provide updates on evacuation arrangements if necessary.

Some Nigerians living in Johannesburg and Pretoria reportedly described the atmosphere as tense, saying many foreigners have reduced movements and temporarily shut down businesses to avoid attacks. Civil society groups have also called on both governments to strengthen cooperation and prevent further violence.

South African authorities have repeatedly condemned xenophobic violence and promised to prosecute those responsible for attacks on foreign nationals. Analysts warn that rising unemployment, poverty, and social frustration continue to fuel anti-immigrant sentiments in parts of the country.

Meanwhile, families of Nigerians in South Africa have urged the Federal Government to act swiftly to guarantee the safety of citizens and provide immediate support for those willing to return home.
