Petrol Price Hike Forces Abuja Residents to Abandon Cars for Public Transport
Residents of Abuja are increasingly abandoning the use of private vehicles as rising petrol prices continue to place heavy pressure on household incomes. Many commuters across the Federal Capital Territory now rely on buses, taxis, tricycles, and ride-sharing options to reduce transportation expenses.
The latest increase in fuel prices has led to a sharp rise in the cost of living, with workers, traders, students, and civil servants struggling to cope with daily commuting costs. Several motorists said filling a fuel tank now consumes a significant portion of their monthly earnings, forcing them to park their vehicles and seek cheaper alternatives.
Public transport terminals across areas such as Nyanya, Kubwa, Lugbe, and Wuse have witnessed growing passenger traffic, especially during morning and evening rush hours. Commercial drivers have also adjusted fares upward due to increased operating costs, leaving many residents with limited options.
Some Abuja residents expressed concern that the situation could worsen inflation and reduce economic productivity as transportation remains essential for daily business activities. Analysts believe the continued dependence on imported petroleum products and fluctuating exchange rates are contributing factors behind the persistent fuel price increases.
Meanwhile, transport operators are calling on the Federal Government to introduce measures that will ease the burden on Nigerians, including improved public transportation systems and support for local refining capacity.
