US Forces Sink Iranian Boats, Intercept Missiles in Strait of Hormuz Operation

The United States military says it has destroyed six Iranian small boats and intercepted multiple missiles and drones during a major naval operation aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz to global shipping traffic.

According to U.S. Central Command chief Admiral Brad Cooper, Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces launched cruise missiles, drones, and fast attack boats at ships being protected by American forces as part of the operation named “Project Freedom.” The U.S. military responded by shooting down the incoming threats and sinking several Iranian vessels near the strategic waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes, handling a significant portion of global crude exports. Shipping activities in the region have been heavily disrupted following months of escalating conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.

President Donald Trump reportedly ordered the operation to ensure commercial vessels can safely pass through the strait after hundreds of ships became stranded due to security threats and naval blockades.

U.S. officials said the mission involves destroyers, military aircraft, drones, and thousands of troops. American forces also cleared naval mines before escorting commercial ships through the route to demonstrate that passage could resume safely.

Iran, however, denied parts of the U.S. account and warned foreign military forces against operating in the area without coordination. Tensions remain high despite a ceasefire announced earlier in April, with regional fears growing over the possibility of a wider conflict in the Gulf.
