FG Disburses ₦11.8bn Loan Scheme to 6,842 Tertiary Institution Workers

The Federal Government has approved and disbursed a total of ₦11.8 billion in loans to 6,842 workers across tertiary institutions nationwide, as part of its welfare and economic empowerment programme for the education sector.

According to officials overseeing the initiative, the loan scheme is designed to support academic and non-academic staff in federal and participating state-owned tertiary institutions, helping them meet urgent financial needs such as housing, small business support, education expenses, healthcare, and debt relief.

The intervention is being implemented through the government’s staff welfare and credit support framework, which aims to improve productivity and morale within the education sector. Authorities noted that beneficiaries were selected through a verified digital application and screening process to ensure transparency and fairness.

Government representatives emphasized that repayment terms are structured to be affordable, with deductions expected to be made directly from salaries over an agreed period. They added that the scheme is revolving, meaning repayments will enable additional staff to benefit in subsequent phases.

Stakeholders in the education sector have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention amid rising living costs and economic pressure on public workers. However, some have also urged the government to ensure long-term sustainability and expansion of the programme to cover more institutions.
