‘I Think ADC Is Dead’ — Akpabio Reacts As Senators Dump Party
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has declared that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) appears to be “dead” following a fresh wave of defections by lawmakers at the National Assembly.
Akpabio made the remark during Tuesday’s plenary session while reading the resignation letter of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who officially announced his exit from the ADC and return to the Labour Party.
Reacting to the growing number of defections, the Senate President joked that lawmakers leaving the ADC should submit their names together instead of announcing them individually on the Senate floor.
According to Akpabio, the repeated defections had become too frequent, prompting him to state, “I think ADC is dead.”
Abaribe, in his resignation letter, cited internal crises, lawsuits, and conflicting court judgments within the ADC as reasons for his decision to leave the party. He maintained that his exit was not due to any personal disagreement with party members or leaders.
The political shake-up did not stop with Abaribe. Senator Victor Umeh also announced his defection from the ADC to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), while Senator Rufai Hanga moved from the NNPP to the NDC.
At the House of Representatives, several lawmakers equally dumped the ADC and joined the NDC, further deepening concerns over the stability and future of the opposition party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Political observers say the latest defections signal intensifying realignments within Nigeria’s political landscape as parties reposition for the next electoral cycle.
