Peter Obi’s Defection From ADC Was Premeditated — Abdullahi

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has alleged that the defection of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, from the party was a carefully planned political move rather than a sudden decision caused by internal crises.

The accusation was made by ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, during an interview on a national television programme where he reacted to the recent exit of Obi and former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, from the opposition coalition.

Abdullahi argued that the reasons given by Obi for leaving the party, including allegations of internal wrangling and legal disputes, were not convincing. According to him, the ADC had provided a stable political platform and even granted Obi significant concessions within the party structure.

He claimed that Obi enjoyed privileges that were not extended to other aspirants, including influence in key party appointments. Abdullahi insisted that the former presidential candidate’s departure had been in motion long before the public announcement.

The ADC spokesman further stated that certain politicians only viewed the coalition as a “special purpose vehicle” to achieve personal ambitions ahead of the 2027 general elections. He maintained that despite the exit of high-profile figures, the party remained focused on building a strong opposition capable of challenging the ruling APC.

Obi had earlier cited internal divisions, court cases, and distrust within the coalition as reasons for withdrawing from the alliance. His departure, alongside Kwankwaso’s, has raised fresh concerns about the ability of opposition parties to unite ahead of the next presidential election.

Political analysts say the development could weaken efforts to form a united opposition front against President Bola Tinubu in 2027, especially as rival ambitions continue to threaten coalition stability.
