Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has strongly condemned the recent wave of xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals in South Africa, calling on authorities to ensure the safety and protection of Nigerians living in the country.
In a statement released on Thursday, Obi described the attacks as âdeeply troubling and unacceptable,â stressing that no individual should be subjected to violence, discrimination, or intimidation because of their nationality or background.
The former presidential candidate urged the South African government to take immediate and decisive action against those responsible for the attacks while strengthening measures to protect vulnerable communities affected by the unrest.
Obi also expressed concern over reports of Nigerians being targeted during the violence, noting that both Nigeria and South Africa share a long history of diplomatic relations, economic cooperation, and pan-African solidarity.
According to him, African nations must continue to promote unity, peaceful coexistence, and mutual respect among citizens across the continent instead of allowing hatred and xenophobia to divide communities.
He further appealed to the Nigerian government and diplomatic missions in South Africa to closely monitor the situation and provide support for affected Nigerians where necessary.
The renewed concerns over xenophobic violence have sparked reactions from several African leaders, human rights groups, and community organizations, many of whom are demanding stronger protections for migrants and foreign residents in South Africa.
