Xenophobic Attacks: NANS Threatens Protest Against South African Firms in Nigeria
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), South-West Zone D, has threatened to stage peaceful protests and picketing against South African companies operating in Nigeria following renewed xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.
According to the student body, the planned action became necessary after reports emerged of fresh attacks and killings involving Nigerian citizens living in South Africa. NANS accused South African authorities of failing to adequately protect foreign nationals despite repeated incidents of violence and intimidation.
In a statement issued by the zonal coordinator, Adeyemo Josiah Kayode, the association expressed outrage over what it described as a ârecurring pattern of hostilityâ against Nigerians. The group warned that it would mobilise students across the country to demonstrate against major South African-linked businesses in Nigeria, including telecommunications and entertainment firms.
NANS stated that it was morally unacceptable for South African companies to continue thriving economically in Nigeria while Nigerians allegedly face fear, harassment, and deadly attacks abroad. The association stressed that peaceful protests and advocacy campaigns would continue until concrete actions are taken to guarantee the safety of Nigerians in South Africa.
The latest development comes amid growing diplomatic tension between Nigeria and South Africa over increasing reports of xenophobic violence targeting African migrants. Several African countries have already condemned the attacks and urged Pretoria to take decisive action against perpetrators.
NANS also called on the Nigerian government to intensify diplomatic pressure on South Africa and ensure justice for victims of the attacks. However, the association maintained that it remains open to dialogue with South African business representatives and diplomatic channels in order to resolve the crisis peacefully.
