2027: Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso Backs Peter Obi Presidency, Accepts VP Role
Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has reportedly declared support for a possible 2027 presidential bid by former Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi, while also expressing readiness to serve as vice president in a joint opposition ticket.
Kwankwaso made the remarks during an interview on ARISE News, where he explained that consultations with northern political leaders led to the decision to align with Obi ahead of the 2027 general elections. According to him, Obi emerged as the most capable figure to lead a broad opposition coalition seeking to challenge the ruling APC government.
The former NNPP presidential candidate said the alliance was built on trust, competence and a shared commitment to national development. He dismissed fears of rivalry within the coalition and insisted that political partnerships can succeed when leaders place national interest above personal ambition.
The development is expected to reshape opposition politics in Nigeria, especially as talks continue among key political actors seeking a united front ahead of 2027. Political observers believe an Obi-Kwankwaso alliance could combine strong support bases from the South-East, North-West and youth voting blocs across the country.
However, the proposed alliance has continued to generate mixed reactions within political circles. While supporters see it as a strong alternative to the ruling party, critics argue that opposition coalitions in Nigeria often struggle with internal disagreements and zoning controversies.
Recent political activities have also shown increasing cooperation between Obi and Kwankwaso, including their participation in opposition summits and grassroots mobilisation campaigns linked to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
