FG Cracks Down on Unapproved Contract Variations in MDAs
The Federal Government of Nigeria has intensified oversight on Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) following rising concerns over unauthorized contract variations and cost escalations in public projects.
According to government sources, the new directive aims to enforce strict compliance with procurement laws and curb financial leakages that often arise from unchecked adjustments to approved contract sums and project scopes. The move is part of broader fiscal discipline reforms targeting transparency in public spending.
The Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) has reportedly been mandated to strengthen monitoring mechanisms and ensure that any variation in contract terms must receive prior approval from the appropriate regulatory authorities. MDAs found bypassing due process may face sanctions, including project suspension and administrative penalties.
Officials say the policy is also intended to improve budget implementation efficiency and restore public confidence in government procurement processes. Internal audits across key sectors are expected to be intensified in the coming months.
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to accountability, warning that deviations from approved contract procedures will no longer be tolerated under its reform agenda.
