Nigeria Will Not Fall — Gowon Reassures Citizens on National Unity
Former Nigerian Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, has reaffirmed his long-standing message of unity, declaring that Nigeria will not collapse despite its political, economic, and security challenges.
Speaking at a national civic engagement forum in Abuja, Gowon emphasized that the strength of Nigeria lies in its diversity and resilience. He noted that although the country has faced difficult periods in its history, including civil unrest and economic hardship, it has always managed to remain united.
Gowon, who led Nigeria during the civil war era, urged citizens to reject divisive narratives and focus on national rebuilding. He stressed that peace, dialogue, and mutual understanding remain essential tools for sustaining democracy and development.
He also called on political leaders, traditional rulers, and youth groups to work together in strengthening national cohesion. According to him, Nigeria’s future depends on the collective responsibility of its people rather than individual or ethnic interests.
The former leader further encouraged optimism, stating that with consistent reforms and commitment to good governance, Nigeria can overcome its present challenges and achieve greater stability.
