APC Primaries: Governorship Aspirants Reject Consensus Arrangement In 10 States
Ahead of the forthcoming governorship primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC), several aspirants across 10 states have reportedly rejected moves by party leaders to impose consensus candidates.
The disagreement, which is generating tension within the ruling party, is said to be strongest in states where multiple influential politicians are battling for governorship tickets ahead of the next election cycle. Aspirants and their supporters insist that transparent primaries remain the only acceptable democratic process.
Party stakeholders pushing for consensus arrangements argue that the method would help reduce internal crises, cut campaign expenses and prevent post-primary litigations. However, many aspirants fear the move is designed to favour candidates backed by powerful political figures and governors.
In some states, meetings held by party elders and national leaders reportedly ended without agreement as aspirants openly vowed to challenge any attempt to deny members the opportunity to vote during the primaries.
Political analysts warn that unresolved disputes could trigger defections and weaken the APCâs chances in key states if the party fails to manage the growing discontent among contestants.
Despite the resistance, APC leadership is expected to continue consultations with stakeholders in a bid to achieve unity before the official primaries commence.
