Israeli authorities have reportedly detained several activists aboard a Gaza-bound aid flotilla after the vessel was intercepted by the Israeli navy in international waters, according to multiple reports.
The ship, which was said to be carrying humanitarian supplies and pro-Palestinian activists, was attempting to reach the Gaza Strip amid growing international concern over the humanitarian situation in the enclave. Israeli officials stated that the interception was carried out to enforce existing maritime restrictions around Gaza.
Sources familiar with the incident said activists onboard resisted the interception verbally, while footage circulating online appeared to show Israeli naval personnel boarding the vessel before escorting it to an Israeli port. Authorities later confirmed that those onboard were taken into custody for questioning.
The Israeli government defended the action, arguing that unauthorized vessels attempting to breach the naval blockade pose security concerns and are subject to interception. Officials also stated that humanitarian aid intended for Gaza should be transferred through approved land crossings and monitored channels.
Meanwhile, organisers of the flotilla condemned the interception, accusing Israel of obstructing humanitarian efforts and violating international norms. Human rights groups have also called for transparency regarding the condition and treatment of the detained activists.
The development comes amid renewed global attention on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where shortages of food, medicine, and basic necessities continue to raise alarm among international agencies.
