Fubara Withdraws from Rivers APC Governorship Primary Amid Political Tensions
Governor Siminalayi Fubara has officially withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary election in Rivers State, a development that has stirred fresh reactions across Nigeriaâs political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Fubara announced his withdrawal in a personally signed statement released on Wednesday night, explaining that the decision followed âdeep reflection and extensive consultationsâ with family members, political associates, and supporters. He stated that although the decision was difficult, the peace, stability, and unity of Rivers State must come before personal ambition.
The Rivers governor pledged to support whoever eventually emerges as the APC governorship candidate, stressing that leadership requires sacrifice and compromise during critical moments. He also thanked party members, supporters, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for their encouragement and support throughout the political process.
Fubaraâs withdrawal comes amid prolonged political tensions in Rivers State involving his former political ally and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The rivalry between both camps has dominated the stateâs politics since 2023, leading to internal party divisions, impeachment attempts, and a temporary emergency rule declared in Rivers State in 2025.
Political observers believe the governorâs decision may significantly reshape the APC primary contest in Rivers State, especially after other aspirants, including Tonye Cole, also stepped down from the race. Analysts say the withdrawals could strengthen the chances of candidates believed to have the backing of the Wike political structure within the party.
Despite stepping aside from the governorship contest, Fubara maintained that his action should not be viewed as fear or surrender, insisting it was a deliberate sacrifice aimed at preserving peace and ensuring political stability in Rivers State.
