Seyi Makinde Signs Executive Order Regulating Vigilante, Security Groups in Oyo
Governor Seyi Makinde has signed a new executive order aimed at regulating the activities of vigilante and private security groups operating across Oyo State. The move is designed to strengthen public safety, improve accountability, and ensure that all community-based security outfits operate within the framework of the law.
According to the state government, the executive order introduces stricter registration procedures, operational guidelines, and monitoring mechanisms for vigilante organisations and local security groups. The administration said the measure became necessary following growing concerns over unlawful activities, abuse of power, and clashes involving some unregulated security outfits.
Under the new directive, all vigilante groups are expected to register with designated government agencies and provide details of their personnel, areas of operation, and sources of funding. The order also empowers security authorities to sanction or disband any group found violating human rights, engaging in illegal operations, or operating without official approval.
The state government noted that the policy is not intended to weaken community policing efforts but to ensure better coordination between local security groups and conventional law enforcement agencies. Officials believe the order will help improve intelligence gathering, crime prevention, and public trust in grassroots security operations.
Residents and stakeholders have reacted differently to the development, with some praising the government for promoting accountability, while others expressed concerns over possible political interference in community security structures. Security experts, however, say proper regulation remains necessary to prevent misuse of vigilante groups and protect citizensâ rights.
