FCTA Launches Free Health Insurance Scheme for Inmates in Correctional Centres
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has commenced a free health insurance programme aimed at improving healthcare access for inmates across correctional centres in Abuja.
According to officials, the initiative is designed to ensure that all incarcerated persons receive adequate medical attention without financial barriers. The programme covers general healthcare services, emergency treatment, and routine medical check-ups within designated correctional facilities.
Authorities explained that the move aligns with broader efforts to strengthen public health systems and uphold the rights and welfare of inmates. It also seeks to reduce health-related deaths and untreated illnesses in detention facilities.
The FCTA noted that medical teams will be deployed in collaboration with relevant health agencies to monitor implementation and ensure consistent service delivery. The initiative is also expected to support rehabilitation efforts by improving inmatesâ overall wellbeing.
Officials described the scheme as a step toward inclusive healthcare coverage and justice reform within the territory.
