Romuald Wadagni Sworn In as Benin President

Former Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni has officially been sworn in as the new president of Benin, succeeding former leader Patrice Talon after a decade in power. The inauguration ceremony took place in Cotonou on Sunday, marking the beginning of a new political chapter for the West African nation.

Wadagni, a 49-year-old economist and technocrat, won the April 12 presidential election with more than 94 percent of the votes. His victory followed years of serving as Benin’s finance minister, where he was credited with driving economic reforms, reducing budget deficits, and improving the country’s investment climate.

During his inaugural speech, President Wadagni pledged to govern with integrity, strengthen democratic institutions, and improve living standards for citizens. He also promised to focus on job creation, social welfare, and regional security as jihadist threats continue to affect northern Benin and neighboring Sahel countries.

Regional leaders and foreign dignitaries attended the swearing-in ceremony, including Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Tinubu at the event in Cotonou.

Wadagni’s presidency is widely viewed as a continuation of Talon’s economic policies, though analysts say his administration will face pressure to address inequality, unemployment, and growing security concerns in the region.
