FG Unveils How Nigerians Can Access Over 100 Free TV Channels Without Buying New Decoders

The Federal Government has announced that Nigerians can now access more than 100 free television channels through the ongoing Digital Switch Over (DSO) programme without purchasing new decoders. The initiative is aimed at improving access to digital broadcasting, expanding entertainment choices, and reducing the cost burden on households across the country.

According to government officials, viewers with compatible digital television sets or existing approved Set-Top Boxes can receive the channels after a simple signal scan or software update. The platform offers access to local and international news, sports, movies, children’s programmes, music, education, and religious content.

Authorities explained that the channels are being transmitted through the country’s free-to-air digital broadcasting network, which does not require monthly subscriptions once users have the required digital-compatible equipment. Nigerians using older analogue televisions may still need approved digital receivers, but many current decoders already support the service.

The government said the move is part of efforts to strengthen the broadcasting sector, improve information dissemination, and promote local content production. Officials also encouraged citizens to verify signal availability in their areas and follow installation guidelines provided by licensed broadcast operators.

Industry stakeholders believe the expansion of free digital television access could increase competition in the pay-TV market and provide affordable viewing alternatives for millions of Nigerians facing rising living costs.
