Atiku Visits Amaechi After ADC Presidential Primary Victory
Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Atiku Abubakar, on Thursday visited former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi at his Abuja residence, barely a day after emerging winner of the partyâs presidential primary ahead of the 2027 general election.
Atiku secured the ADC presidential ticket after defeating Amaechi and businessman Mohammed Hayatu-Deen in the keenly contested primary election. According to official figures released by the party, Atiku polled 1,846,370 votes, while Amaechi garnered 504,117 votes and Hayatu-Deen received 177,120 votes.
The visit is widely seen as part of reconciliation efforts aimed at uniting party members following tensions that emerged after the primary. Amaechi had earlier rejected the outcome of the exercise, alleging irregularities and voter disenfranchisement during the process.
Speaking after the meeting, Atiku said discussions focused on Nigeriaâs worsening economic hardship, insecurity, and the urgent need for patriotic leaders to work together in finding solutions to the nationâs challenges. He also used the opportunity to celebrate Amaechiâs recent birthday in what observers described as a move to ease political tensions within the opposition coalition.
Sources within the party indicated that the meeting may pave the way for stronger cooperation among key ADC stakeholders as preparations intensify for the 2027 presidential election. Party leaders have repeatedly urged members to close ranks and present a united front against the ruling APC.
