Nigeria TV Info Dangote Refinery Becomes World’s Biggest Jet Fuel Exporter Amid Global Supply Crisis

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has emerged as the world’s largest exporter of aviation fuel, marking a major milestone for Nigeria’s energy sector and strengthening the country’s position in global petroleum markets. The development comes as disruptions in the Middle East continue to reshape global fuel supply chains and force buyers to seek alternative sources of jet fuel.

According to recent industry data from S&P Global Commodities at Sea, the refinery switched to what industry analysts described as “max jet mode” following heightened geopolitical tensions that affected traditional fuel export routes. In April 2026, the Lagos-based refinery became the world’s single largest exporter of aviation fuel, supplying major markets across Europe, Africa, and the Americas.

The refinery’s jet fuel exports have recorded extraordinary growth since operations began in 2024. Export volumes surged from about 18,000 barrels per day in April 2024 to approximately 158,000 barrels per day by April 2026, representing a 770 percent increase within two years. Analysts attribute the rise to growing global demand, Europe’s search for alternative suppliers, and the refinery’s strategic Atlantic location, which offers shorter and safer shipping routes than those passing through conflict-prone regions.

Europe has become one of the biggest destinations for Dangote’s aviation fuel, with countries such as France, Spain, and the United Kingdom increasing imports significantly. Industry data shows Nigerian cargoes accounted for about 20 percent of Europe’s jet fuel imports in April, compared with just 4 percent a year earlier.

The refinery has also become a critical supplier within Nigeria, providing more than 95 percent of the country’s Jet A1 aviation fuel demand while exporting billions of litres to international markets. Aviation operators have described the facility as a game changer for Nigeria’s airline industry, helping to reduce dependence on imported fuel despite ongoing global market volatility.

Industry reports estimate that the refinery exported more than 57 million barrels of jet fuel between 2024 and 2026, reinforcing its status as one of the most influential new players in the global aviation fuel market. Experts believe the refinery’s growing export capacity could further boost Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings and strengthen the country’s role as a major energy hub for Africa and beyond.
