Govs Considering N100,000 New National Minimum Wage — NGF

The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors' Forum and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has disclosed that state governors are considering a new national minimum wage of N100,000 to cushion the effects of rising inflation and the increasing cost of living across Nigeria.

According to AbdulRazaq, discussions are ongoing between state governments, the Federal Government, and organised labour to develop a wage structure that will improve workers’ welfare while remaining financially sustainable for governments. He explained that the proposal is driven by growing economic hardship, high transportation costs, soaring food prices, and the declining purchasing power of workers.

The NGF chairman stated that governors recognise the urgent need to improve workers’ living conditions but must also consider the fiscal realities facing state governments. He noted that consultations are focused on balancing better salaries for workers with the need to continue funding infrastructure projects, public services, and development programmes.

Nigeria’s current statutory minimum wage stands at N70,000 per month, though some states, including Lagos State, Rivers State, and Imo State, reportedly pay above the national benchmark. Labour unions, particularly the Nigeria Labour Congress, have continued to demand a comprehensive salary review, insisting that workers deserve wages that reflect present-day economic realities.

If approved, the proposed N100,000 minimum wage could trigger fresh national discussions on workers’ welfare, inflation management, government revenue, and broader economic reforms as Nigerians continue to grapple with rising living expenses.
