FG scraps three-month terminal leave for civil servants

The Federal Government has reportedly abolished the long-standing three-month terminal leave granted to civil servants before retirement. The policy change is aimed at improving workforce efficiency, reducing administrative gaps, and ensuring continuity in public service delivery.

According to sources within the civil service reform committee, the decision forms part of broader efforts to streamline personnel management and cut down on prolonged absences that often leave key offices understaffed. Officials argue that the previous arrangement created operational bottlenecks, especially in ministries and departments with high turnover rates.

The reform is also expected to strengthen succession planning, ensuring that retiring officers hand over responsibilities more effectively without extended leave periods. However, concerns have been raised by some labour stakeholders who believe the policy could affect transition welfare for retiring workers.

The government maintains that pension processes and other retirement benefits remain unaffected, assuring that civil servants will continue to receive all entitlements due to them under existing regulations.
