NUT Holds Rallies in Oyo, Kano, Other States Over Abducted Teachers and Pupils

The Nigeria Union of Teachers has organized peaceful rallies across several states, including Oyo State and Kano State, to demand the immediate rescue of teachers and pupils abducted by criminal groups in different parts of the country.

The demonstrations, held simultaneously in major cities, saw teachers, education stakeholders, parents, and civil society groups calling on security agencies and government authorities to intensify efforts to secure the release of the victims. Protesters carried placards with messages urging stronger protection for schools and improved security measures in vulnerable communities.

NUT leaders expressed concern over the increasing cases of kidnappings targeting educational institutions, warning that the trend threatens access to education and creates fear among students, teachers, and parents. The union emphasized that schools should remain safe spaces for learning and development.

Speaking during the rallies, union representatives urged federal and state governments to prioritize the safety of educators and learners by deploying adequate security personnel, strengthening intelligence gathering, and implementing effective school protection strategies.

The union also appealed to communities to support security efforts by providing timely information that could help prevent attacks and facilitate the rescue of kidnapped victims. Participants observed moments of prayer and solidarity for the safe return of the abducted teachers and pupils.

Education advocates noted that persistent insecurity could negatively affect school enrollment and attendance, particularly in rural areas where schools are often vulnerable to attacks. They called for urgent and coordinated action to restore confidence in the nation's education system.

The NUT reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the welfare and security of teachers and students nationwide, while urging authorities to ensure that all abducted persons are safely reunited with their families.
