Nigerian Workers Deserve a Living Wage as Economic Pressure Deepens
Amid rising inflation, fuel subsidy removal, and escalating food prices, Nigerian workers are intensifying calls for a living wage that matches the current cost of living. Labour unions argue that the national minimum wage is no longer sufficient to sustain basic household needs.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have repeatedly urged the Federal Government to review salaries in line with economic realities. Workers across both public and private sectors report worsening hardship, with transport, housing, and food costs consuming most of their income.
Economic analysts warn that without urgent wage adjustments, productivity may decline further as households struggle to survive. Government officials have acknowledged ongoing negotiations but stress the need to balance wage increases with fiscal stability.
Labour leaders, however, insist that improving workersâ welfare is essential for economic recovery, social stability, and national productivity.
