Democracy Has Not Failed Nigeria, We Have – Otti

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has stated that Nigeria’s democracy remains functional, insisting that the real challenge lies in the conduct of political actors rather than the system itself.

Speaking at a public engagement on governance and national development, Otti argued that democratic institutions in Nigeria have continued to evolve since 1999, but their effectiveness is often weakened by poor leadership, corruption, and weak accountability mechanisms.

He maintained that blaming democracy for Nigeria’s socio-economic and security challenges is misleading, stressing that citizens and leaders alike must take responsibility for strengthening institutions.

According to him, “Democracy has not failed Nigeria; we have failed democracy through our actions, inactions, and disregard for the rule of law.”

Otti further called for stronger civic responsibility, transparent governance, and reforms that prioritize the welfare of citizens. He emphasized that sustainable development can only be achieved when leaders focus on service delivery rather than personal or political gain.

The governor also urged youths to remain engaged in the democratic process, noting that their participation is critical to shaping the country’s future.
