UK Commends Ekiti Governorship Election as CSOs Raise Concerns Over Vote-Trading and BVAS Delays
The United Kingdom has praised the peaceful conduct of the Ekiti State governorship election, describing the exercise as a positive demonstration of Nigeria's democratic progress. In a statement, UK representatives acknowledged the orderly atmosphere in many polling units and commended the commitment of voters, election officials, and security agencies.
However, several Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) expressed concerns over alleged incidents of vote-trading and delays in the deployment and functionality of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) in some locations. Election observers reported that while the technology generally improved voter accreditation, late arrivals and technical glitches slowed the voting process in certain polling units.
The CSOs urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to strengthen election logistics and ensure stricter enforcement of laws against vote-buying to enhance public confidence in future elections. They also called on security agencies to investigate reported cases of electoral malpractice and prosecute offenders.
Despite the concerns, observers noted that the election was largely peaceful, with voters able to exercise their civic rights without widespread violence. Political analysts believe that addressing operational challenges and electoral misconduct will further strengthen Nigeria's democratic institutions and improve the credibility of future elections.
