2027 Timeline: INEC, Political Parties Clash Over Access Codes for Candidates’ Upload
A fresh dispute has emerged between the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and several political parties over the release of access codes required to upload candidates' details to the commission's online nomination portal ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Some political parties claimed they had not received the access codes, raising concerns that the delay could affect their ability to submit candidates before the July 11 deadline. The disagreement has become more contentious as rival factions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) continue to seek official recognition to upload their respective candidates.
INEC, however, dismissed allegations of unnecessary delay, insisting that the access codes had been prepared and released after the completion of training sessions for party representatives. The commission maintained that the nomination portal remains open and that the submission deadline has not been extended.
According to INEC, the training was designed to equip political party officials with the knowledge required to navigate the electronic nomination system and ensure a seamless submission process. The electoral body urged all registered parties to complete their nominations within the stipulated timeframe.
The disagreement comes at a crucial stage in preparations for the 2027 general elections, with observers warning that unresolved disputes over candidate nominations and party recognition could trigger legal battles and complicate the electoral timetable.
