Nigeria TV Info reports:
46 More Firms Abandon National Grid for Self-Generated Power
No fewer than 24 bulk electricity consumers in Nigeria secured licenses in 2024 to disconnect from the national grid and generate their own electricity, while 22 others obtained approvals for off-grid generation.
In total, the 46 entities are set to produce up to 289 megawatts of electricity, according to the latest report by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
The report shows that several companies and institutions received NERC's permits for captive power generation last year. These permits allow entities to own and operate power plants solely for their internal consumption and not for sale to third parties.
This growing shift reflects the increasing move by major consumers to secure reliable and uninterrupted power supply amid persistent grid instability.
