Battle to Remove Mark and Aregbesola Intensifies Ahead of Monday's Court Hearing
The internal strife within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) continues to escalate as factions within the party prepare for a pivotal court session scheduled for Monday, September 15, 2025. The dispute centers on the legitimacy of the leadership of Senator David Mark and former Governor Rauf Aregbesola, who currently serve as the party's National Chairman and National Secretary, respectively.
Despite the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recognizing the Mark-led interim leadership, a faction within the party, led by former Deputy National Chairman Nafiu Bala Gombe, has contested their positions. Gombe's faction filed a suit seeking to bar INEC from recognizing the current leadership. However, the Federal High Court in Abuja declined to grant an interim order against Mark and Aregbesola, stating that the application did not meet the necessary legal requirements for such a restraining order.
In response to the court's decision, the ADC issued a statement affirming that no court order had removed Mark and Aregbesola from their positions. The party described reports suggesting otherwise as politically motivated fake news intended to create confusion following INEC's recognition of the current leadership.
The upcoming court hearing on Monday is expected to address the substantive issues surrounding the leadership dispute. Both factions are preparing for a legal showdown that could have significant implications for the party's structure and its role in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.
As the situation develops, all eyes will be on the Federal High Court's ruling, which may either solidify the current leadership or pave the way for a new direction within the ADC.
