Charlie Kirk Fatally Shot at Utah University; Trump Says ‘I Think We Have Him’ as Suspect Reportedly in Custody

Conservative activist Charlie Kirk, 31, was shot and killed during a public event at Utah Valley University earlier this week. U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed on Friday that a suspect is now in custody, saying during a Fox News interview, “I think we have him”

Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA and a high-profile conservative commentator, was struck by a sniper’s bullet in the neck while addressing an audience of about 3,000 people. The shooting occurred as he was answering a question about mass shootings. Witnesses described chaos as attendees fled or sheltered in classrooms.

Law enforcement officials said the shooter had accessed a rooftop overlooking the venue shortly before the event. A high-powered bolt-action rifle believed to have been used in the attack was recovered nearby. Surveillance footage showed a figure dressed in black with emblems of a bald eagle and U.S. flag. The FBI confirmed the shooter fled shortly after the single shot was fired.

The suspect has been identified  as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson of Utah. According to officials, he was reportedly turned in by a religious minister, with some reports suggesting his own father played a role in the surrender.

Investigators had earlier released images of a person of interest, leading to thousands of public tips.

President Trump denounced the killing as a “heinous assassination” and announced Kirk would be posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his role in mobilizing young conservatives. Vice President JD Vance and his wife visited Kirk’s family in Utah to offer condolences.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox condemned the attack as a political assassination. Lawmakers across party lines expressed outrage, warning of escalating political violence in the U.S. The killing also sparked a wave of online misinformation, prompting authorities to urge the public to rely on official updates.

Funeral arrangements for Kirk, a prominent figure on college campuses and close ally of Trump, are expected to be announced soon. Authorities say
