Nigeria TV Info — Residents of Ikota, Lekki Call on Sanwo-Olu Over Torrential Flooding

Ikota and the wider Lekki axis are once again under siege by flooding, as residents issue a desperate Save-Our-Souls (SOS) appeal to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Following Tuesday’s torrential rainfall, entire neighbourhoods were submerged, with homes, roads, and businesses engulfed in water.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of devastation, with streets swallowed by floodwaters and families wading through waist-deep waters to salvage belongings. Businesses were destroyed, and residents are appealing for urgent government intervention.

“This is no way to live,” lamented one distraught resident. “Every rainfall is a disaster. We are losing everything while the government watches.”

Residents point to man-made causes for the recurring floods, accusing developers of illegally erecting structures on canals and drainage channels. They allege that government agencies have failed to enforce urban planning regulations, resulting in blocked waterways and worsened flooding.

“Until the government restores this area according to the original master plan, the flooding will not stop,” another homeowner said while standing in knee-deep water.

Urban planning experts confirm that Lagos State’s master plan prohibits construction on waterways but warn that enforcement has been weak and inconsistent. They stress that without strict adherence to planning laws, flooding crises like this will remain a recurring reality.

As residents await government action, the flooding in Ikota and Lekki remains a growing humanitarian and environmental challenge.
