Hanoi, Vietnam â The death toll from Typhoon Bualoi and the catastrophic floods it unleashed across Vietnam has climbed to 51, with 14 people still missing and 164 others injured, according to a government disaster management report released Friday.
The powerful storm made landfall on Monday in northern central Vietnam, bringing massive sea swells, destructive winds, and torrential rainfall that crippled communities and destroyed vital infrastructure.
Authorities revealed that the estimated economic losses have surged to 15.9 trillion dong ($603 million), a sharp increase from the 10.6 trillion dong ($435.8 million) reported just a day earlier. Roads, schools, and government offices were extensively damaged, while tens of thousands of households were left without electricity due to widespread power outages.
Livelihoods have also suffered severe damage, with more than 230,000 homes inundated or destroyed and nearly 89,000 hectares of rice fields and other crops wiped out. Although no major industrial damage has been reported, factories run by Foxconn, Formosa Plastics, Luxshare, and automaker Vinfast operate within the affected regions, raising concerns over supply chain disruptions.
In response, the State Bank of Vietnam has instructed lenders to support businesses struggling with the aftermath. Deputy Governor Pham Thanh Ha urged banks to restructure or freeze loans for affected companies in a bid to stabilize the economy.
Vietnam, a fast-rising regional manufacturing hub, remains increasingly vulnerable to extreme weather events fueled by climate change. Typhoon Bualoi is the latest in a series of devastating storms that have battered Southeast Asia this year, sparking urgent calls for stronger resilience measures in both communities and critical industries.
