Parties: President shouldn’t appoint INEC chair
Opposition political parties and civil society groups have renewed calls for electoral reforms, insisting that the president should no longer have the power to appoint the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). They argued that such powers compromise the independence of the electoral body, especially ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Groups including the Labour Party (LP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) proposed that an independent selection committee comprising the judiciary, National Assembly, and civil society should handle the appointment.
They maintained that credible elections depend on impartiality, transparency, and a truly autonomous INEC, urging President Bola Tinubu to support constitutional amendments that will guarantee electoral neutrality.
