Nigeria TV Info — Reps Launch Probe into Alleged Mismanagement of Niger Delta Oil Spill Clean-Up Funds

Abuja, Nigeria — The House of Representatives on Friday inaugurated an ad hoc committee to investigate alleged mismanagement of funds allocated for oil spill clean-up projects in the Niger Delta region.

The Green Chamber reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring accountability, transparency, and justice for the oil-producing communities affected by decades of environmental degradation.

Speaking during the inauguration in Abuja, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, represented by the Chief Whip, Hon. Usman Kumo, emphasized the need for the committee to uncover how the clean-up funds were managed and whether they achieved their intended purpose.

“We have to find out the capacity of the managers that were put in place by the government to manage the funds of the clean-up. Also, there is a need to understand the causes of the mismanagement,” Abbas said.

He further stressed the importance of determining the total amount dedicated to the clean-up, the transparency of its administration, and whether due process was followed throughout the exercise.

The Speaker noted that the investigation was part of the legislature’s broader efforts to ensure that resources meant for the development and restoration of the Niger Delta environment are properly utilized and that communities devastated by oil pollution finally get relief.

The ad hoc committee is expected to conduct a thorough investigation, summon key stakeholders, and present its findings to the House within a specified timeframe.
