Nigeria TV Info â Daylight Heist at Louvre Museum: Priceless Jewels Stolen in Paris
Paris, France â A major manhunt is underway in Paris following a daring daylight raid on the world-renowned Louvre Museum, where a gang of masked thieves stole jewels described as âpriceless.â
French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez revealed that the robbery occurred within minutes on Sunday morning, shortly after the museum opened to visitors. The suspects reportedly used a mechanical ladder to access a first-floor window, broke into display cases, and escaped on mopeds.
Authorities said the gang targeted the Gallery of Apollo, home to Franceâs royal jewels. Among the stolen items were nine pieces dating back to the 19th century, including a brooch and a pair of emerald earrings that once belonged to Empress EugĂ©nie, wife of Napoleon III. The Empressâs ornate crown, adorned with 1,354 diamonds and 56 emeralds, was found nearby, apparently dropped by the robbers in their rush.
Paris prosecutors confirmed that two of the four suspects entered the museum and threatened guards, using battery-powered disc cutters to break into the display cases. A vehicle-mounted extendable ladder, believed to have been used in the heist, was discovered near the River Seine.
The French culture ministry reported that the gang attempted to set fire to the vehicle before fleeing but were stopped by a museum staff member. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Minister Nuñez described the stolen jewels as âof immeasurable heritage value,â emphasizing that their cultural significance far exceeds any market value. Experts warn that the criminals may attempt to dismantle and sell the gemstones, which are harder to trace than famous artworks.
The Louvre was evacuated and remained closed for the day while investigators combed the site. Tourists arriving at the museum were turned away, many unaware of the audacious heist. American visitors Jim and Joan Carpenter told Reuters they were escorted out as security cleared the galleries.
Authorities continue to pursue leads in what is being called one of the most brazen art and jewelry thefts in recent French history.
