Labour Gives FG Four Weeks to End Varsity Crisis
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have issued a four-week ultimatum to the Federal Government to resolve the lingering crisis in Nigerian universities. The labour unions warned that failure to meet the deadline would result in a nationwide strike in solidarity with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other education sector unions.
In a joint statement released on Monday, the unions accused the government of neglecting its responsibilities to the education sector, particularly the poor welfare of lecturers, unpaid allowances, and decaying infrastructure in public universities.
The statement read in part: âEducation is the foundation of national development. We will not sit idly while the future of our youths is jeopardized by government inaction.â
Labour leaders also demanded the immediate implementation of agreements previously reached with ASUU and the prompt release of revitalization funds for tertiary institutions. The government, in response, appealed for dialogue, assuring that efforts were ongoing to address the unionsâ demands.
