New Delhi/Beijing (October 27, 2025) – Direct flights between India and China have officially resumed, marking a major step toward improving relations between the two Asian powers after years of diplomatic tension and pandemic-induced disruptions.

On Monday, IndiGo flight 6E 1703 departed from Kolkata and landed safely in Guangzhou, southern China, carrying about 180 passengers. The flight became the first direct commercial service between the two nations since early 2020, when routes were suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The prolonged suspension of flights was further compounded by a deadly border clash in the Himalayas in 2020, which led to a deep freeze in bilateral relations. However, both nations have since made efforts to rebuild trust and restore normal exchanges.

Last year, India and China reached a landmark agreement to improve coordination between border patrol forces, signaling a cautious yet positive shift in diplomatic engagement.

In a statement released earlier this month, the Indian government described the resumption of flights as a move that would “facilitate people-to-people contact” and support “the gradual normalisation of bilateral exchanges.”

Observers see the development as a hopeful sign of easing tensions between the world’s two most populous nations, with potential benefits for tourism, business, and regional stability.
