Nigeria Immigration Service to Introduce Single Travel Emergency Passport

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced plans to introduce a Single Travel Emergency Passport (STEP) to replace the current Emergency Travel Certificate (ETC).

The development was made public by the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, during the Joint Thematic Meeting of the Khartoum, Rabat, and Niamey Processes, which was co-hosted by Nigeria in partnership with the Government of France.

According to Nandap, the new STEP initiative is part of ongoing reforms by the Service to strengthen Identity Management and improve Border Governance in line with international standards. She explained that the STEP will provide more secure, efficient, and reliable emergency travel documentation for Nigerians abroad.

A statement issued on Wednesday by the NIS spokesperson, Akinsola Akinlabi, confirmed that the high-level meeting brought together key national and international stakeholders in migration management. These included representatives from:

National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI)

National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP)

ECOWAS

African Union (AU)

European Union (EU)

Representatives from various African and European nations.

The Immigration Service says the new document will enhance Nigeria’s border security architecture while ensuring seamless emergency travel for citizens facing urgent travel needs abroad.

More details on the implementation timeline are expected to be released soon.
