Rubio Urges Global Action to Cut Off Weapons to Sudan’s RSF Amid Genocide Allegations
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called for a coordinated international campaign to halt the supply of weapons to Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF), accusing the paramilitary group of carrying out “horrifying atrocities” in the war-torn city of El-Fasher.
Speaking at the conclusion of a G7 foreign ministers meeting in Canada, Rubio issued one of the Trump administration’s strongest condemnations yet of the Sudan conflict. He said the RSF has engaged in systematic attacks on civilians, including mass rape, targeted violence against women and children, and widespread killings.
“The international community cannot remain silent while these crimes continue,” Rubio said, urging governments and arms suppliers to immediately cut all channels of support to the RSF.
Sudan has been engulfed in civil war since April 2023, when a power struggle between rival generals spiraled into full-scale conflict. The RSF last month captured El-Fasher after an 18-month siege, securing control over all major cities in Darfur. Satellite imagery shows bodies lining streets and patches of blood-soaked earth, reinforcing reports of mass executions and brutal assaults.
Humanitarian agencies and US officials warn that non-Arab communities across Darfur are being deliberately targeted in what they describe as acts of genocide. Aid groups say hundreds of thousands remain trapped without food, medical supplies or safe passage, while international evacuations and humanitarian corridors remain severely restricted.
Rubio reiterated that the US and its allies must increase pressure on all parties fueling the conflict and act urgently to prevent further mass atrocities.
