Tanzania’s Post-Election Violence Threatens International Funding – President Samia Warns

Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan has issued a strong warning that the violence and unrest following the country’s disputed October election could jeopardize its ability to secure international funding.

Speaking on Tuesday during the swearing-in ceremony of newly appointed government ministers, President Samia said the post-election disturbances had tarnished Tanzania’s global reputation, making international lenders more cautious.

She noted that the instability had weakened the country’s chances of accessing crucial loans and development support from global financial institutions. As a result, she urged government officials to intensify efforts to boost domestic revenue generation to reduce reliance on external assistance.

Tanzania currently depends significantly on foreign aid, which accounted for about 23 percent of government revenue in 2023. Although this reliance has been gradually decreasing, President Samia stressed that sustaining growth requires stability, credibility, and stronger internal economic strategies.
