Federal High Court Convicts Nnamdi Kanu on All Terrorism Charges
Abuja â In a landmark ruling, the Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on all seven terrorism-related charges brought against him by the Department of State Services (DSS).
Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment, stating that the prosecution presented sufficient and credible evidence to prove its case. The judge noted that Kanu did not present any defence, choosing instead to rely solely on the prosecutionâs evidenceâa decision the court said left it with no option but to convict.
The court also criticized Kanuâs strategy to pursue the creation of a Biafra nation through violent means, describing such actions as characteristic of a terrorist organization.
Sentencing is now awaited, with lead prosecutor Adegboyega Awomolo urging the court to impose the death penalty. Awomolo highlighted that counts 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 carry the maximum penalty, reflecting the severity of the offences.
This ruling marks a significant moment in Nigeriaâs ongoing efforts to curb terrorism and maintain national security.
