DHQ Begins Review After Kebbi Governor Links School Attack to Troop Withdrawal

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) on Sunday said it is conducting a thorough review of troop deployment after Kebbi State Governor, Mohammed Idris, claimed that terrorists struck just 30 minutes after soldiers were withdrawn from Government Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Danko Wasagu Local Government Area.

The attack led to the abduction of 25 schoolgirls, alongside another set of victims taken from St. Mary’s Catholic School, Papiri, in Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State.

In a statement, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, described the incidents as “heinous”, stressing that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain fully engaged in ongoing operations to rescue the girls and apprehend those responsible.

He said the military is deeply concerned and is reviewing operational decisions taken before the attacks to determine whether any lapses occurred.

“All operational decisions are based on intelligence assessments and the broader security architecture of the region,” Onoja said. “Nevertheless, if the ongoing review identifies any lapse or gap, the Armed Forces will take immediate corrective action to prevent a recurrence.”

DHQ extended its sympathies to the abducted students, their families, and the affected communities, assuring Nigerians that every effort is underway to ensure their safe return.
