Seven-Year Single Term Will Stabilise Governance — LASU Professor

A foremost political scientist at Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Adewale Olatunji, has advocated for a seven-year single term for Nigeria’s president and governors, arguing that such a reform would strengthen stability in governance and reduce the distractions associated with re-election politics.
Speaking at a public lecture in Lagos, the academic noted that the current two-term system fuels political tension, wastes resources, and encourages incumbents to prioritise personal political survival over development.

Prof. Olatunji explained that a single, longer tenure would give leaders sufficient time to plan and execute long-term policies without the pressure of campaigning for a second term. He added that the system could help reduce corruption driven by desperation to retain power.

He also urged the National Assembly to consider constitutional amendments that would ensure continuity of projects across administrations and strengthen institutions for accountability, rather than focusing only on changing office holders.

Political stakeholders and civil society groups have continued to debate the merits and implications of restructuring Nigeria’s political system, especially at a time when citizens demand stronger leadership and improved governance outcomes nationwide.
