Soldiers seize power in Guinea‑Bissau, detain president
A group of military officers in Guinea-Bissau say they have seized control of the country, detaining President Umaro Sissoco Embaló and suspending the electoral process. The coup — announced on state television on 26 November 2025 — came a day before provisional results from a hotly contested presidential election were due.
Gunfire was reported near the presidential palace and the national electoral commission in the capital, Bissau, as troops assumed positions.
The military — calling itself the High Military Command for the Restoration of National Security and Public Order — declared all land, air, and sea borders closed, imposed an overnight curfew, and suspended all state institutions “until further notice.”
International observers and regional bodies such as ECOWAS and the African Union have condemned the takeover and called for a return to constitutional order.
